Dogs and cats can be loving additions to any family this holiday season—it's practically a "No Brainer"! Once the excitement around your new furry family member settles, figuring out the best way to care for your new pet might require a bit more thought.
While cats and dogs share many of the same adorable, fluffy attributes, caring for them differs in several ways. Veterinary technician and owner of Doggone Pets, Patrice Young, offers expert advice on caring for your newest family member. With over a decade of experience in pet care, Patrice shares a few important tips on getting your pet acclimated to their new home and keeping them healthy.
1. Understanding Breed Characteristics
Researching breed characteristics before bringing a pet home can set you up for success. Knowing your pet's breed and their specific traits helps personalize their needs when it comes to grooming, socialization, diet, and any predisposed medical conditions. This simple research can help avoid surprises down the road.
2. Introducing Your Pet to Other Pets in the Home
If you're adding a new pet to a home with an existing pet, it's important to take things slow. Patrice recommends gradual introductions, keeping pets separated during mealtimes but allowing playtime together for a few hours each day. Over time, gradually increase their interaction until they can comfortably coexist. Cats, in particular, may take longer to adjust to a new pet in the home.
3. Establish a Relationship with a Veterinarian
Building a relationship with a trusted veterinarian is key to keeping your pet healthy. Regular check-ups and preventative care such as heartworm prevention, vaccinations, and dental cleaning are crucial. Vaccines protect your pet from illnesses like rabies, panleukopenia, and parvo. If you plan to board your pet, take them to daycare, or groom them, additional vaccines may be required.
4. Pet Proof Your Home
Just like you would childproof your home for a toddler, you'll need to do the same for your new pet! Keep breakable and toxic items out of reach. For both dogs and cats, close doors to rooms you want to keep off-limits. Cats love to explore, and if left to roam, they might even sneak into your kitchen cabinets. Consider investing in cabinet locks to protect both your cookware and your curious cat.
With a few tips like these, your new pet will be off to a healthy, happy start. Enjoy your new fur baby, and soak in all the cuddles and wet kisses for years to come. If you have any questions for Patrice or need dog walking, grooming, or in-home pet care services, visit DogGonePetss.com.
